Google AdSense is a program run by Google through which website publishers in the Google Network of content sites serve text, images, video, or interactive media advertisements that are targeted to the site content and audience. These advertisements are administered, sorted, and maintained by Google. They can generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis. Google beta-tested a cost-per-action service, but discontinued it in October 2008 in favor of a DoubleClick offering (also owned by Google). In Q1 2014, Google earned US$3.4 billion ($13.6 billion annualized), or 22% of total revenue, through Google AdSense. AdSense is a participant in the Ad Choices program, so AdSense ads typically include the triangle-shaped Ad Choices icon. This program also operates on HTTP cookies. In 2021, over 38.3 million websites use AdSense.

Overview:

Based on website content, the user's location, and other variables, Google uses its technology to show advertising. Anyone interested in using Google's targeted advertising system can sign up through Google Ads. One of the most well-known programmes for designing and displaying banner and responsive advertising on websites and blogs is called AdSense. Based on the size of the user's device, responsive advertising change themselves. These commercials are less invasive, and frequently, the material is pertinent to the website. The most well-known advertising network, AdSense is used by many websites to monetize their web content (websites, online movies, online audio content, etc.). AdSense has demonstrated its effectiveness in generating advertising revenue for small websites who lack the resources or other significant revenue sources. Webmasters insert a small JavaScript code into the website's pages to display contextually appropriate adverts. Numerous publisher case studies on the AdSense website show how this advertising programme has been incredibly profitable for content-rich websites. The rule restrictingAdSense advertising to three per page has been abandoned by Google. Given that a page has enough content, AdSense publishers can now post multiple AdSense ads on it. Advertising and promotional materials shouldn't go beyond the substance of the page, according to Google's rules for assuring effective ad placement.

Some webmasters work very hard to increase their AdSense revenue. They achieve this primarily by adhering to  best practices:

1.       They create high-quality content that engages readers and provide a positive user experience.

2.       They adhere to webmaster best practices.

3.       They refrain from oversaturating their website with ads.

4.       They don't experiment with techniques that entice consumers to click advertising. Google forbids webmasters from utilizing expressions like "Click on my AdSense ads" to boost clickthrough rates. "Sponsored Links" and "Advertisements" are acceptable terms.

5.       Websites with a bad reputation are not linked to or redirected to by them.

The Ads programme, which in turn has a complicated pricing structure based on a Vickrey second price auction, is the source of all AdSense revenue. AdSense demands that an advertiser submit a sealed offer, or a bid that cannot be seen by rivals. Additionally, marketers only pay one bid increment more than the second-highest bid for each click they receive. Currently, Google splits 68% of AdSense revenue with content network partners and 51% of AdSense revenue with partners in AdSense for Search.Google announced the makeover of AdSense with a new logo on June 18, 2015.

History

In March 2003, Google introduced the "Content targeting advertising" version of its AdSense programme.Applied Semantics, a rival service to AdSense, first used the moniker "AdSense." Google used the term after purchasing Applied Semantics in April 2003. Since AdSense delivered advertisements that were contextually relevant to web page content and that material was less likely to be related to a user's commercial desires than search results, several advertisers argued that AdSense produced inferior results than Google advertisements. For instance, compared to someone conducting a flower-related search, someone browsing a blog about flowers was less likely to be interested in placing an order for flowers. As a result, Google started allowing its advertisers to choose not to use the AdSense network in 2004.

Gmail's founder, Paul Buchheit, had the notion to integrate advertisements into the company's email platform. He and others, however, assert that Susan Wojcicki organised the team that transformed that concept into a hugely popular product with the support of Sergey Brin.Early in 2005, AdSense was thought to be responsible for 15% of Google's overall revenue. The option to "enable multiple networks to display ads" was one of the new capabilities that Google AdSense said it would be introducing in 2009. Google AdSense began utilizing search history in contextual matching in February 2010 to provide more pertinent adverts. Google AdSense introduced Direct Campaigns, a service that allows publishers to sell advertising directly, on January 21st, 2014. On February 10, 2015, this function was discontinued.

Types:

·         Content:

Users with specific interests or settings may be chosen as targets for the content-based adverts. The targeting can be CPC (cost per click) or CPM (cost per thousand impressions) based; the only notable difference between the two is that with CPC targeting, earnings are based on clicks, whereas CPM earnings recently were actually based not just on per views/impression but on a larger scale, per thousand impressions, which drove it out of the market and made CPC ads more prevalent.

·         Search

Publishers can use AdSense for search to display adverts related to search queries on their website and earn 51% of the money made from such ads. Through the usage of Custom Search advertisements, AdSense custom search advertisements can be presented either next to results from an AdSense custom search engine or next to results from internal search. Only publishers who have been "white-listed" can use Custom Search Ads. The possibility for higher Click Through Rates allows for better returns to be made, even if AdSense for Search has a lesser revenue share (51%) than AdSense for Content (68%) does.

·         Video

Publishers of video content, such as websites that host videos, can make money with AdSense for video by placing advertisements from Google's sizable ad network. The publisher has control over the kinds of adverts that are displayed with their video content. There are several formats available, including as linear video advertisements (pre-roll or post-roll), overlay ads that overlay the video content with AdSense text and display ads, and the True View format. Companion advertisements, or display ads that play alongside video content outside the player, are another option for publishers. Publishers who host video material in a player rather than on YouTube can use AdSense for video.

·         unit links

Link units are specifically tailored to consumers' interests. Users may be more engaged in the advertising they finally view since they directly interact with the ad unit.

Instead of being compensated for clicks on the initial topics themselves, AdSense publishers are paid for clicks on the ads that are connected from link unit topics. The links' advertisements are pay-per-click Google adverts that resemble those seen in standard AdSense ad units.
